Asbestos roofs are quite common on older industrial estates and the best way of refurbishing them is to coat them. You might think the method of dealing with asbestos is to remove it, but the safest way is to manage it. Remember that asbestos won’t break down and certainly can’t be incinerated.

Leaking train roof solution.
On some of the older trains in service roof leaks are not uncommon. The constant vibration and movement tend to loosen the joints between the panels, especially above the driver’s cabs.
The solution is of course a waterproofing roof coating. But experience by the train maintenance staff shows that very few such coatings actually work. The exception is the straightforward to apply Blocksil HB system.

2021 has seen a dozen Network Rail owned Remote Electrical Buildings (REB’s) refurbished with Blocksil coatings.
The traditional coating, applied to what in effect are steel shipping containers, tends to last anywhere from a few months to perhaps a year, which is a problem, not just for the money “wasted” on material, labour and access. These REB’s (they are known by a number of acronyms such as SSP, UPS, PSB and so on) are usually trackside and contain extremely high value and complex electronics that control the local railway network signals and points, so ensuring they remain in good condition is vitally important.
The Blocksil approach has been to use our 25 year product warranty graphene enhanced coating solution along with an innovative method of dealing with sagging roofs.

An X1 Degreaser case study from a business owner, Rob Hupperdine (Nutcracker Design and Marketing Limited).
“I am restoring a vintage Massey Ferguson 165 Tractor. Before I could commence with restoring the vehicle, I needed to remove 56 years of old oil, grease and grime. Firstly, I used the old tried and tested Gunk on one side of the tractor, which cleaned the vehicle up OK (after a lot of effort).
When I ran out of Gunk, I tried Blocksil X1 Degreaser.

Anti-Fouling Coating in action…
Blocksil prides itself at being at the forefront of coating technology.
In the first half of 2019 we took on a brand new anti-fouling coating. The key part of this new coating is that it deters barnacles from sticking to it. The barnacles are not harmed in any way, they just don’t like the coating. So they don’t stick to it.
The benefits of an effective anti-fouling coating are explored in more detail in our white paper (click here to go to it) and now we have some actual client performance to support us.
The privately owned yacht Frankie B 3 was re-launched on 7th June 2019 after all the hull works were completed, including the Blocksil anti-fouling coating applied by Blocksil to the rudders on 6th June. During the summer and autumn 2019 the sailing performance around the Solent was enhanced by the clean and smooth finish of the hull and rudders. She was locked into the marina in the water during the winter. The water in the marina is largely sea water with fresh water adding during rainfall and cleaning.
Frankie B 3 was lifted out of the water for jet wash and hull inspection on 27th May 2020. The marina boatyard operatives used a high pressure jet wash to remove dirt and fouling off the hull. The rudders were inspected and found to be in good clean condition. Using hot water and non-abrasive household cleaner the rudders were lightly freshened up with minimal physical manual effort. The final inspection revealed no reduction of the protective paint finish applied by Blocksil.
Blocksil Anti-Fouling Coating has clear benefits for any seaborne equipment where barnacle build up will adversely affect performance, such as boats, tidal power devices and moving parts.
Flat Roof Coating
As a supplier to the international roof coating market we have the pleasure of working with many applicators and contractors. Having said that we don’t always get to see the finished result, so it is pleasing to be able to share this photograph with you from our key Benelux contractor.
The roof was leaking, of course, and even though it was only a small domestic roof over an extension, our contractor gave it the same attention they would as for a large commercial roof.

The coating used was the Blocksil Flat Roof Coat MT. Reinforced with fibres, this coating is a high quality waterproofing system. Based on silane technology, the hybrid polymer is fully overcoatable. It can be manufactured without the addition of solvents or plasticizers.

X1 – the future of degreasing.
March 2020 sees the launch of the Blocksil X1 Degreaser.
Designed to take advantage of developments in surfactant chemistry, X1 is a highly effective degreaser that lifts all manner of grease and oil from surfaces ready for it to be washed away.
X1 can be used on surfaces such as metals, plastics, tarmac and tiles. Simply spray on, wait a minute then wipe and wash away. Sold in easy to use trigger sprays or larger bottles for more industrial use, the X1 has been successfully tested and demonstrated in domestic and industrial environments.
Chris Knowles, Chief Technical Officer reports that “this is the most effective degreaser I have come across”.
Just one example of its potential use is in cleaning up car and van engine bays. One client sprayed the X1 onto various components within an engine bay then hosed it down. To give you an idea of how good X1 is, the photos below show the before and after appearance of the washer bottle cap and nearby engine components. No mechanical action was used in the cleaning, just hosed water.

A second example is the cleaning of lawnmowers ready for spring use. Again, the lawnmower was sprayed with X1 then washed down. The mower came up looking as new.

Ferrari Mondial Restoration using Blocksil Rust Converter
Classic cars bring both joy and hard work to their owners. And bringing a car back to it’s original condition after years of neglect can be a slow process, but also brings great pleasure when completed.
As an industrial coatings and surface treatments developer and supplier, Blocksil has the privilege of working with a variety of clients.
One such is Concept Restorations Limited of Fazeley, near Tamworth, (and their associate company Automotive Protection Limited). CRL is a leading vehicle restoration, detailer and paint protection expert in the English midlands. Their vast knowledge and understanding of the most valuable and rarest vehicles in the modern world makes them a first choice for specialist work.
A project underway in early 2020 is the complete restoration of a Ferrari Mondial. At over 30 years old, time has not been kind to this particular car. The Ferrari Mondial (Type F108) was a mid-engined V8 manufactured between 1980 and 1993. Styling was by Pininfarina and bodywork by Carrozzeria Scaglietti. The model that CRL are working on is the 2+2 cabriolet.
The photograph of the boot sill shows where CRL have applied the Blocksil Rust Converter (the black strip that is highlighted in green). The Rust Converter converts Iron Oxide into Iron Phosphate, ready for overcoating or further work as required. A ready to use water based liquid that can be applied by brush, roller or spray, the Rust Converter is touch dry in 30 minutes and hard dry in 4 hours at 200C.
CRL are also working on two E-Type Jaguars, both of which will benefit from the Rust Converter.

Banksy is an anonymous British street artist whose satirical street art combines dark humour with graffiti that provides a political and social commentary. His distinctive stencilling technique is to be found on streets, walls and bridges of cities throughout the world.
His reindeer which appeared in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter in December 2019 appear to be pulling a street bench. The bench is used by the homeless who are shown kindness by the local community with hot drinks and food. The symbolism of the reindeer pulling the bench as a sleigh into the sky is a representation of that kindness.

Unfortunately someone decided to “improve” the mural by adding red noses to the reindeer. So to prevent further vandalism and to preserve the artwork, Blocksil were invited to apply one of our high performance transparent coatings onto the wall.
Carried out under the auspices of the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust and in keeping with the social promise of the Banksy, Blocksil donated both the coating and our time to apply the coating.

As the foremost developer and supplier of industrial and commercial roof refurbishment coatings, Blocksil will always take the opportunity to gain first hand application experience. Being directly involved with the application of one of our roof coatings gives us direct and immediate feedback.
The roof coating chemistry being offered by Blocksil is highly complex and highly effective. Yet application is quite straightforward with only one pass being needed. Combined with quick curing, the coating applicator / contractor can be off the site much quicker than with older coating ideas such as Silicones or Alkyds.

Blocksil used this opportunity to prove coating adhesion to the old Silicone and to tweak the coating cure time. The first stage of the job was for one side and the gutter, with the other side following on. With a warranty period of up to 20 years for the standard coating, a leaking roof is a thing of the past.

Solvent free, our coating provides outstanding resistance to weathering to retain lasting flexibility and adhesion to the substrate without cracking or peeling. Moisture tolerant, it hardens to a tough elastic coating with high impact and dirt resistance.
Application is by airless spray, brush or roller.
Blocksil’s primary function is the design and development of coating solutions. Occasionally we are also asked to apply the coating solution on site. An industry where we are well known for this complete service package is construction.
Our coating expertise was requested by a new client to help them with a cladding refurbishment. In this instance the exterior GRP cladding on the building had aged and was looking unsightly. Our client was wanting the building cladding recoated to freshen it up as the building was a flagship site. The area to be coated was approximately 5,000 square metres (53, 800 square feet) with a building height of 12 to 15 metres (39 to 49 feet) – the building had an angled profile.
Why did our client contact Blocksil? Because painting over GRP isn’t straightforward. The outer coating applied during manufacture of the GRP panels will repel conventional paint and the aging would have changed the surface properties of the GRP in a potentially unknown fashion. In addition, the GRP panels were in situ on a working facility, so the only surface preparation that could be used was jet washing and the coating solution needed to be fully controllable to avoid excessive overspray.
Our Chief Technical Director, Chris Knowles, knew the answer. Polyaspartic.
Polyaspartic as a coating resin has been around for about 20 years, but, applying it on to some 5,000 square metres of vertical surface was likely to be a problem because of its viscosity and its short pot life. The pot life is how long the coating will remain useable once mixed. Too short and it will cure within the spray gun. The short pot life and high viscosity of a standard Polyaspartic coating makes it difficult to the point of impossible to spray a 15 metre high building.
Needless to say Chris Knowles was able to organise a reformulation of the chosen Polyaspartic to gain a long enough pot life and a good enough viscosity for the subcontract applicators to apply it.
Is our client happy? Yes. Our ability to give them a one stop shop and back up the coating and workmanship with an insurance backed guarantee has taken a weight off their minds.
With regards to long term durability, Polyaspartics are the next generation of topcoats and should easily exceed ten years colour and gloss retention.
Temple Quay Central is a new mixed use (residential and retail) scheme situated on Bristol’s floating harbour and located close to Temple Meads railway Station.
This Freetank area public art commission is making a distinctive contribution to the development of the area, reinforcing Temple Quay Central as a key destination within the city centre.
Bristol is a city and county in South West England with a population of 450,000 and the metropolitan area is the 12th largest in the United Kingdom. Bristol can trace its roots back to the Iron Age and received a royal charter in 1155. From the 13th to the 18th century, the city was among the top three English cities after London in tax receipts. It was surpassed by the rapid rise of Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham in the Industrial Revolution.
Bristol was a starting place for early voyages of exploration to the New World. In 1499 William Weston, a Bristol merchant, was the first Englishman to lead an exploration to North America.
The city’s modern economy is built on the creative media, electronics and aerospace industries.
UK born Roger Hiorns’ sculptural practice meditates on the act of artistic creation, observing what happens when the process is handed over to reactive, “living” material and its metamorphoses. Many of Hiorns’ three-dimensional projects yield to the autonomous generative properties of his chosen substances to ‘isolate’ objects, to make us conscious of their origins and their contexts.

By using dialogue and adaptive design they help progressive institutions realise their ambitions and reinforce their values. Making the most of what is already there and adding judiciously to maintain the distinctiveness of each place, they can transform its capacity.
The brickwork in the Freetank area has been enhanced and protected using Blocksil’s anti-graffiti coating and the statues have received a coating of special oil. Blocksil’s coating was chosen because it has demonstrated time and again that it is the coating to use for protecting brickwork against graffiti.

Blocksil is a supplier of specialist coatings to the rail industry.
Our coatings are usually found in the repair workshops, helping the maintenance departments achieve their goals. An example of this activity would be our bellows repair coating.
Bellows are the flexible connectors found between two adjoining passenger carriages. Developed for railway use, these sorts of connectors are also used on buses and trams.
In addition to wear, a common problem with bellows is one of damage, primarily vandalism. Once punctured the bellows naturally cease to be watertight which leads to corrosion of the carriage body.
Any repair to the damaged bellows needs to be permanent and flexible. A significant additional benefit of the Blocksil bellows repair is that it is self-sealing. So should anyone puncture the repair, it will seal itself. This property is not something that can be achieved through adhesive tape repair techniques.
Why repair a bellows rather than re-place it? Cost. The cost of repairing a railway carriage bellows is a fraction of the cost of replacing it, not least as the bellows can remain in situ during the repair process. And the repair technique is easy to follow, so specialist training isn’t needed.

Liverpool’s Fleur de Lis

We were delighted to be asked to tender for a most unusual project in Liverpool.
The architect wanted to recreate the ‘fleur de lis’ design (which appears on the near-by Liver Building) on an external floor sited between an apartment block and set of offices.
The stencils were specially designed to fit the space and the ‘fleur de lis’ pattern was ‘painted’ using an acrylic coating. The final result is stunning! The picture below shows the project in construction. Blocksil were asked to apply a long lasting anti-graffiti coating over the top of the finished pattern.
Liverpool is a city in North West England, with an estimated population of 500,000. With its surrounding areas, it is the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom, with over 2.3 million people living there. Liverpool is located on the northern side of the River Mersey. It became a borough in 1207 and a city in 1880. Its growth as a major port was paralleled by the expansion of the city throughout the Industrial Revolution. The port handled general cargo, freight, coal and cotton. The city merchants were also involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In the 19th century it was also a key port of departure for Irish and English emigrants to the United States. Liverpool was home to both the Cunard and White Star Line and was the port of registry of the ocean liners Titanic, Lusitania and Queen Mary. In recent times the city’s fame derives from music and football.
The fleur-de-lis (a French phrase, fleur means “flower”, and lis means “lily”) is used as a decorative design or symbol. Many of the saints are often depicted with a lily, most prominently St. Joseph.
While the fleur-de-lis has appeared on countless European coats of arms and flags over the centuries, it is particularly associated with the French monarchy in a historical context. It remains an enduring symbol of France that appears on French postage stamps, although it has never been adopted officially by any of the French republics. According to French historian Georges Duby, the three petals represent the medieval social classes: those who worked, those who fought, and those who prayed.
